Healing Through Art: Supporting Displaced Communities in Kharkiv

Healing Through Art: Supporting Displaced Communities in Kharkiv

Within the collective sites of Kharkiv, which currently serve as a sanctuary for hundreds of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), a unique journey of recovery is unfolding. We facilitate ongoing group psychosocial support (PSS) sessions titled "The Magic of Color," designed to help residents bridge the gap between past trauma and emotional stability. In the first half of April alone, we conducted two adult-focused sessions utilizing a methodology that integrates art therapy with professional psychological counseling. As participants focus on painting plaster figurines, an experienced psychologist guides them, helping transform complex emotions into visual expressions.

For those forced to flee their homes in occupied Kupyansk, this form of intervention is critical. Life in collective centers (CCs)—compounded by the loss of one's livelihood and the horrors of war—often leads to feelings of helplessness and chronic anxiety. By picking up a paintbrush, individuals regain a sense of agency and control, even if momentarily, through the act of choosing colors and creating something tangible. This process provides essential psychological relief, reduces stress levels, and fosters social cohesion among neighbors who share similar experiences of displacement. Engaging in these activities within a "safe space" under expert supervision helps participants break through the emotional paralysis often associated with the trauma of loss.

The implementation of this project is the result of a coordinated multi-stakeholder effort. Our team organizes these activities in close partnership with the administrations of IDP collective sites, with the vital support of international partners and charitable foundations. Together, we are creating a space where every painted figure becomes a symbol of resilience and hope. Our mission remains steadfast: to safeguard the mental health and psychosocial well-being of those who, despite immense hardship, continue to persevere and look toward a brighter future.
